Meet Our Coaches
Our coaches bring different backgrounds, experiences, and training styles to FFW, but they all share one goal: helping every athlete get stronger, move better, and feel supported along the way
Kim Smith
Certifications: CrossFit Level 1 & Level 2, CrossFit Kids, Olympic Weightlifting, ACSM Personal Trainer, TRX
Coach at FFW Since: 2013
Kim—fondly known as Coach Kim—is one of our founding coaches. Her passion for fitness began after seeing firsthand how inactivity and poor nutrition can impact long-term health. As she committed to becoming stronger and healthier herself, she discovered a passion for helping others do the same and earned her first training certification in 2009.
Since FFW began, Kim has played a major role in growing our fitness community and building partnerships with local schools and athletic programs. She has a special talent for connecting with younger athletes and is a regular coach for our Kids classes. Kim believes fitness is for every age and ability—and that it’s never too early or too late to get started.

Kate Schamel

Coach at FFW Since: 2013
Kate is one of our founding coaches and has been involved in athletics and fitness for most of her life. A former high school and collegiate volleyball player, she found her way back into fitness in 2001 when she began teaching Spinning, water aerobics, and Les Mills classes.
As a mom of four, Kate believes in leading by example and making health and fitness a lifelong priority. At FFW, she coaches our specialty OCR class, works with personal training clients, and continues to teach Spinning at Family Fitness Works. Her energy, experience, and love for a good challenge have made her an important part of the FFW community since day one.
Steve Hornak
Certifications: CrossFit Level 1, CrossFit Level 2, CrossFit Level 3 Certified
Coach at FFW Since: 2015
Steve has been part of the FFW community for years, first as an athlete and now as a coach. His love for training, competition, and pushing himself eventually led him to coaching, where he enjoys helping others discover just how capable they are.
For Steve, FFW is also a family affair. You’ll often find his wife and kids around the gym—usually causing at least a little bit of a ruckus. He brings a competitive spirit, plenty of humor, and a genuine desire to help athletes get stronger, work hard, and enjoy the process along the way.

Jeff Horton
Certifications: CrossFit Level 1
Coach at FFW Since: 2017
Jeff’s fitness journey began with a desire to become stronger, healthier, and more capable—and over time, that passion grew into a love for helping others do the same. His experience with functional fitness has shown him the value of consistent training, hard work, and having a strong community behind you.
As a coach, Jeff enjoys helping athletes build confidence, improve their movement, and push beyond what they thought they were capable of. He brings an encouraging, down-to-earth approach to coaching and believes that no matter where you’re starting, there’s always an opportunity to get a little better.
Angie Wuertemberger
Certifications: CrossFit Level 1 & Level 2, Olympic Weightlifting L1, TRX, Silver Sneakers, Water Aerobics, CrossFit Nutrition, ACSM Personal Trainer
Coach at FFW Since: 2020
Angie started at FFW as an athlete and quickly fell in love with the challenge, variety, and community that comes with functional fitness. As her passion for training grew, so did her desire to help others experience the same confidence and strength she found through fitness.
As a coach, Angie loves helping athletes challenge themselves, celebrate their progress, and realize they’re capable of more than they think. For her, FFW is truly a family affair—her husband is also a coach, and their daughters are affectionately known as the gym’s “honorary mascots.” They wouldn’t have it any other way.

Thomas Wuertemberger
Certifications: CrossFit Level 1 & Level 2, Olympic Weightlifting L1, Husband of the Year Award
Coach at FFW Since: 2021
Thomas has always enjoyed staying active, challenging himself, and finding new ways to get stronger. His experience with functional fitness eventually led him to coaching, where he enjoys helping athletes improve their skills, push their limits, and have a good time while doing it.
Known for bringing plenty of humor and energy to the gym, Thomas believes training should be challenging without taking yourself too seriously. FFW is also a family affair for him—his wife Angie is a coach, and their daughters are frequent fixtures around the gym. And of course, no Thomas bio would be complete without recognizing his most prestigious qualification: Husband of the Year...every year.
Steve Rankin

Coach at FFW Since: 2022
Steve came to functional fitness looking for a new challenge and quickly found a style of training—and a community—that kept him coming back. Over time, his commitment to training and desire to help others progress naturally led him into coaching.
